Uncovering the Mystery of mastermind JAPAN volume.2 sunglasses

mastermind JAPAN Founder - Masaaki Homma

mastermind Japan was established in 1997 and has been able to keep an impressively low profile since its inception. Designer Masaaki Homma has built an entire high-end brand around the skull and bones motif, and the only thing harder than information on the brand to get ahold of is the actual clothing. Nevertheless, Homma spent eight years working for the master Yohji Yamamoto, and his skills come through in the unbelievably high quality of the clothing, which has drawn comparisons to Hermes. If you can count Karl Lagerfeld among your fans, then you're doing something right.

mastermind JAPAN SIGNATURE SKULL LOGO

After multiple seasonal shows in Paris, Masaaki Homma began experimenting with skull motifs as he had an extreme desire to incorporate them into his designs. In Homma’s 2011 interview with Amazon Fashion Week Tokyo, the designer stated that from the beginning he knew he needed to create a skull design that would instantly be different from those that came before his. Homma notes that he drew about 1,000 skull motifs by hand as he did not own a computer at the time. By the fourth season, Homma established the skull and crossbones design that to this day defines mastermind JAPAN, serving as the brand's logo. During this time the casual designs of mastermind JAPAN had been gaining interest, only to be amplified with the addition of the skull and crossbones.

mastermind JAPAN second Eyewear Collection

mastermind JAPAN released the first in-house eyewear collection for Spring/Summer 2019, two and a half years later, the second collection will launch in Winter 2021. Adopting the iconic aviator and wayfarer styles, mastermind’s five all-black designs will be limited to 300 pairs each.

To mark their rarity each pair will be laser printed with ”1 of 300” on the lens, sitting alongside a mercury printed lens coating depicting mastermind JAPAN’s skull motif. Each pair incorporates branded hardware with chunkier styles featuring a metal skull on the arms.
